Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with UOI. They got into their groups, and began working on their summative. Most of the groups have completed their brainstorming/ planning parts, and they can now work on putting their information together. The students had to stop their work, and head to the auditorium for the Spring Fundraiser assembly. They got to watch Mrs. Haag and Mrs. Hocevar get silly-stringed, as well as Mr. Oliver get pied in the face! Once the assembly was done, we got back to class, and the students continued working on their summative.
After lunch, the students headed over to the Spring Fundraiser Dance Party (in the auditorium), and I stayed in the classroom with the students who didn’t want to attend (grade 3, 4 and 5). I put on a movie for them to watch, and I also got my grade 5’s to complete their DRA’s while they were available.
After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We then talked about the upcoming weeks, and discussed what they will be doing. Shortly after, the students got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Unit 10 math test will be on Tuesday, May 2nd.
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 15 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: review your summative package. Continue brainstorming ideas, and be prepared to share them with your group members! Remember- the more creative, the better! Think outside of the box (costumes, props, music, etc.). STUDENTS CAN BRING IN DEVICES TO ASSIST WITH THEIR UOI SUMMATIVE RESEARCH! This summative will be due on Thursday, May 4th, and all groups will present on this day!
4.       A few more P.E. trips have been added to the Grade 5 list.
a)       Squash: Monday, May 1st and Monday, May 8th. We will leave at 1:30pm, and will be back before the end of the school day. Please note that 2 instructor will help the students at the beginning of the lesson, and they will teach them about the basic concepts, as well as all of the safety precautions. Also, students are to wear their St. Jude’s Academy athletic attire, and running shoes.
b)      Tree Top Trekking- Friday, June 2nd. I will post more details as soon as I get some.
5.       Starting next week (Wednesday, May 3rd), we will have Hatch Canada come to our classroom, to teach the students about coding! Coding is our last UOI topic! Hatch will be with us every Wednesday for the month of May. It is important that your child is present for these lessons, in order to pass this unit. The fee is covered by the school, as this is a new Unit of Inquiry. We are looking forward to learning all about coding!
6.       The grade 6’s will be presenting their Exhibition projects on Friday, May 5th. They will put on two presentations, from a) 9am-11am, and b) 6pm- 8pm. Please come by to check them out, as the grade 5’s will be doing Exhibition projects next year too. It will be a great glance into what next year will be like for them!
7.       The Spring Fundraiser trip will be on Friday, May 11th, from 9am to 11am. (Please note: students who do not raise at least $35 will not be able to attend the trip. They will sit in with another class at the school while we are away that day).
8.       The SJA Spelling Bee is fast approaching! The outline, rules, and in-class spelling words have been sent home- please review it with your child. Our grade 5 in-class competition will take place on Monday, May 8th, starting at 9am. Please make sure your child is ON TIME that day. The winning candidates from our grade 5 class will go on to participate in front of the school on Tuesday, May 16th, at 9am. Winners from that will go on to face the winners from The Maples, as well as the winners from Sunnybrook School (a school in Toronto). Any questions regarding the spelling bee can be directed to Ms. Chang, at vchang@stjudesacademy.com
9.       Due to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00 for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!
That pretty much sums it up for today. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with Gym. When they got back to class, they got into their UOI groups, and began working on their summative. I answered questions that students had, and I was making notes while they were working together. At the end of the period, I checked their progress, and gave the students the option to stay in for recess to get some work done. All of the groups are on the right track, and have accomplished a great amount of work!
After lunch, I introduced lesson #6 (Tiling Patterns) in math, and explained an example on the whiteboard. After, the students were instructed to complete a tiling pattern of their own on grid paper. After math, I took the students outside for some fresh air, and then we came back inside for ice cream sundaes! Unfortunately, the students gobbled it up before I was able to take a picture! (They must have really enjoyed it!).
After second break, the students had French for a few minutes, and then had to head down to the auditorium for the Spring Fundraiser assembly. When they got back to class, they filled out their agendas, and then we moved on to our novel study. We read chapter 14 in class, and then discussed what it was about. I handed out the Spelling Bee outline and words, and then the students packed up and got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:

Think outside of the box (costumes, props, music, etc.). STUDENTS CAN BRING IN DEVICES TO ASSIST WITH THEIR UOI SUMMATIVE RESEARCH! This summative will be due on Thursday, May 4th, and all groups will present on this day!
4.       The Spring Fundraiser started this week! (See the list below). The pledge forms will be due TOMORROW (Friday, April 28th.) Students who raise $35 or more in pledge money will attend a laser tag trip for free! The trip will be on Friday, May 11th, from 9am to 11am. Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, we headed to the cafeteria to indulge in some yummy pancakes!

After tummies were full, we headed back to class and discussed the ideas that students came up with (regarding group members). After hearing all of them, we decided to try one idea (each students picks one partner, and I put them together into groups of 4). With that failing, I decided to use my premade groups, which was created based on the four following things: a) strengths, b) weaknesses, c) students who work well together, and d) students who haven’t worked together yet. I gave them a speech about how important it is to work together, and being in a group with just friends isn’t always the best thing. It’s more important to put your differences aside and cooperate, rather than crying over the group members you wanted to work with. Based on the brainstorming time after groups were formed, it appeared that students were working quite well together!
After lunch, we had the Spring Fundraiser assembly in the Auditorium, and then we worked on our novel study when we returned to class. I completed a homework check, and we discussed chapter 12. We read chapter 13 in class, and discussed how the students in the book must be feeling. Students are encouraged to use some of the content discussed in class, into their journal entry for chapter 13. Moving on to math, we took up the math homework, and I explained the key concepts again. After, the students got ready for second break.
The students headed to French after their break, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We talked about expository writing, and went through some main points. Following this discussion, the students got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: no math homework today. Please sign and return your child’s Unit #9 math test.
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 13 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: review your summative package. Start brainstorming ideas, and be prepared to share them with your group members! STUDENTS CAN BRING IN DEVICES TO ASSIST WITH THEIR UOI SUMMATIVE RESEARCH!
4.       The Spring Fundraiser started this week! (See the list below). The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th. Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their day with Music. When they got back to class, I handed out their UOI Government summative, and we went through it thoroughly. Students were asked to highlight and make note of all of the important aspects in the summative while we went through it. Since this is a group summative, I asked if they could respectfully create their own groups, or if I should make them myself. Almost all of the students (only 1 chose differently), wanted to make their own groups, so I gave them the opportunity to do so. It did not go well, as many students were upset, felt left out, didn’t want to work with certain people, etc. For their homework task, I have asked students to think of a fair way to create these groups, and we will discuss these ideas tomorrow. As a back up, I will be creating fair and equal groups, just in case we cannot come to a strategic decision.
After lunch, the students had Gym, and then we took up our math homework. I introduced lesson #4 (Another number pattern), and taught them about the Fibonacci sequence.  We went through a few examples on the whiteboard, and then they got ready for second break. After, the students had French, and then we went to the auditorium for the Spring Fundraiser Assembly. When it was finished, I handed back their math tests (please sign and return!), and then it was time to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: workbook P# 152-153
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 12 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: review your summative package. Also, come up with 2 ideas for a fair way to group students for the summative. STUDENTS CAN BRING IN DEVICES TO ASSIST WITH THEIR UOI SUMMATIVE RESEARCH!
4.       TOMORROW IS CASUAL DAY!! Students can pay $2 to wear casual clothes (unless parents prepaid at the beginning of the year).
5.       The Spring Fundraiser started this week! (See the list below). The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th. Students who raise $35 or more in pledge money will attend a laser tag trip for free! (Please note: students who do not raise at least $35 will not be able to attend the trip. Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their day with UOI. They completed a worksheet, and then copied down definitions relating to the Canadian government. This will help them a lot when they start working on their summative (which will be handed out tomorrow). While they were independently working on their UOI, I was completing DRA’s, which will be sent home with the term 3 report card.
After lunch, we had a Spring Fundraiser assembly in the auditorium (which cut into our Math period), and then the students had Gym right after. After second break, the students had French, and they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We decided to talk about the list of Role and Responsibilities for Canadian citizens (for UOI), and we shared ideas that we found on the internet. Shortly after, the students got ready to go home. Please note: Students did not get their math tests back today. They will be sent home tomorrow instead.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: no homework
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 11 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: review your list of definitions, and become familiar with what they mean. This will help with your summative!

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with Math! We took up the lesson #2 homework, and then I introduced lesson #3 (Graphing Patterns). We went through some examples from the textbook, and I reviewed the main components in a line graph. Working in pairs, the students worked on their textbook work for this lesson. After, we moved in to our novel study, and I checked the homework (journal for chapter 9). As a class, we read chapter 10, and then the students got ready for Gym.
After lunch, the students had Music, and then they watched a Powerpoint presentation put on by two grade 6 students (for their exhibition project). Following that, the students worked on an Earth Day art project, (picture below), and I played a few potential songs for our Arts Night act.

After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We then talked about their UOI homework, and discussed the lists they came up with. Students were able to add to their lists, if they agreed with roles/ responsibilities other students came up with. I explained that for homework they must add to their initial list, and they are allowed to use online sources. After a quick classroom clean up, the students got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Workbook p# 150-151
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 10 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: Add to your list of the roles and responsibilities that citizens have in Canada. You should come up with at least 5 more ideas! You are allowed to use online sources!

Hello Parents!
The students seemed to have a great day with the supply teacher yesterday. She had wonderful things to say about the grade 5’s, in which I was pleased to read about. Thank you to Ms. Khan- the students are looking forward to having you back!
Today the students started off their morning with Novel Study. We read chapter 9, and discussed what it would be like to be in their (the students’) position. After, we got into our groups and played a game for UOI. Students were randomly picked to act out a responsibility, and the groups must guess a) what the responsibility is, and b) the level of government it falls under. It appeared to be quite a fun activity, as the students were involved and were working together to guess accurately.
After lunch, we took up the unit 9, lesson #1 homework. We went through many examples on the whiteboard, which helped to support their understanding. I then introduced lesson #2 (Exploring Patterns in Decimals with a Calculator), and showed them many examples on my laptop (using the giant calculator). For their homework, students are to use calculators for this specific lesson. After math, the students got ready for Gym.
After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We talked about their newspaper report, and had a discussion about things they found confusing. After, we played a quick game, and then they got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Novel Study: read chapter 9 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their day with Gym. Following that, they had their Unit 9 Math test on Length, Perimeter and Area. Once they were finished, they either read quietly, or finished up their UOI worksheets. After lunch, we read chapter 8 in our novel study book, and then students were instructed to create a poem like Shannen did. Once everyone finished, they all presented their poems in front of the class, and then we got ready for second break.
After break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We discussed my expectations for tomorrow, as I will be away at a professional development workshop for the day. I reminded the students about being respectful, and how important it is to be listening at all times. I will be back on Thursday, and we will discuss possible Earth Day activities for Friday.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Novel Study: read chapter 8 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
2.       Just a reminder, students are now allowed to wear their Spring Uniforms to school!

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with UOI. As a whole class, we discussed the three levels of government, and the leaders in each sector. After, we discussed the responsibilities in each level of government, and talked about possible reasons why they fall into those categories. I then handed out a few worksheets, and told the students that they are to be completed over the long weekend. After UOI, we took up the lesson #9 math homework, and then I introduced lesson #10 (Estimating Area). We discussed the main concepts and strategies, and then went through examples together.  After, we did a complete review of Unit 9, in preparation for their unit test on Tuesday (April 18th). I offered to work with students during recess, but unfortunately no one took me up on that offer.
After lunch, the students had Music, and then they had Gym. Following second break, they had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. I came around and checked their Chapter 6 novel study journal, and collected their protest poster. I reminded the students to take all of their books for the weekend, and then I handed out a little Easter gift (see below for a picture!). The students stacked their chairs, and then got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Lesson #10 workbook homework P# 144-145. The Unit 9 math test will be on Tuesday, April 18th. I strongly recommend that students complete the “Show What You Know” pages at the end of their chapter- P#344-345 in their textbook. Also, unit 8 retests were handed back yesterday, so please sign them and return them by tomorrow.
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 7 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Protest posters were due today, but students have until Tuesday to submit it.
3.       There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 14th, and Monday, April 17th, as it is Easter Long Weekend.
4.       Spring Uniforms can be worn, starting on Tuesday, April 18th.
5.       The Spring Fundraiser forms were recently sent home, and they will be due on Wednesday, April 19th. The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th.
6.       Friday, April 21st is Earth Day, and students are encouraged to dress up in Earth colours.
7.       Due to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00 for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!

That pretty much sums it up for today. I hope everyone has a wonderful (and safe!) long weekend!

Hello Parents!
Today we started off our morning with Math. We took up the lesson #8 homework, and then I introduced lesson #9 (Finding the area of an irregular polygon). We went through a few examples together on the whiteboard, and then the students were instructed to answer a few questions in their groups. We discussed these answers together once they were done. We then moved on to our Novel Study book, and the students shared their journal entries with their group members. Together, we read chapter 6, and then the students were given a blank piece of paper. They were instructed to create a protest poster, as if they were a student at the school in the book. If this wasn’t completed in class, it must be finished for homework.
We then got ready and headed out for recess, and then had lunch. While the students were eating, I put on a movie (Finding Dory), which helped with the noise level (since other classes were still in session). After lunch, we all got ready and headed out on the French Trip. It was a great experience, and the students really seemed to enjoy it!
When we got back to class, students ate their snack/remaining lunch, and continued watching the movie. While it was on, they also had time to work on their protest poster. Students who finished their poster was even able to start/ finish their journal entry for chapter 6! Well done! The students then filled out their agendas, and got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Lesson #9 workbook homework P# 142-143. The Unit 9 math test will be on Tuesday, April 18th. Also, unit 8 retests were handed back today, so please sign them and return them by tomorrow.
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 6 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Protest posters are also due tomorrow.
3.       The Spring Fundraiser forms were sent home yesterday, and they will be due on Wednesday, April 19th. The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th.
4.       Tomorrow (Thursday, April 13th ) is Easter Spirit Day, so students are encouraged to dress up in an Easter related outfit!
5.       There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 14th, and Monday, April 17th, as it is Easter Long Weekend.
6.       Spring Uniforms can be worn, starting on Tuesday, April 18th.
7.       Friday, April 21st is Earth Day, and students are encouraged to dress up in Earth colours.
8.       Due to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00 for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!

That’s pretty much it for today. I hope everyone has a wonderful night!

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, we took up our lesson 7 math homework, and then I introduced lesson 8 (Calculating the Area of a Rectangle). We went through examples on the whiteboard, and then students were free to complete their math textbook work. After math, two grade 6 students came to our classroom to do a presentation on their exhibition topic. They shared a powerpoint, and had the students engage in a debate. Then, the students headed out for lunch.
Once lunch was done, the students had Music, and then we had Novel Study. They shared their journal entries, and then we read Chapter 5 as a class. We got ready for second break, and then the students had French right after. When they got back to class, they filled out their agendas, and I handed out their Spring Fundraiser packages. These forms will be due on Wednesday, April 19th.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. When they got back to class, some of the students worked on their math retest, and others began working on a report writing package. This will help with their understanding of how to write an expository piece, like the one they have to write for their OWA for Term 3. I also had a few Grade 6 level spellers help with marking the spelling tests that were done while I was absent last week. Following this, the students got ready for lunch.
After, the students got into their UOI groups, and we had our last debate about why their country (and style of government) is better than the rest. Overall, this was a great hands on experience, for both the students and myself. After the debate, the students got ready for second break. When they got back, they headed to French, and then filled out their agendas in class. We then took up our lesson 6 math homework, and I introduced lesson #7 (Calculating the perimeter of a rectangle). We went through a few examples on the board, and then went through a few textbook examples. A short while after, the students got ready to go home.
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Lesson #7 workbook homework P# 138-139. The Unit 9 math test will be on Tuesday, April 18th.
2.       Novel Study: no novel study homework today. Students are to make sure they have read up to chapter 4, and have a corresponding journal entry. I will be marking them!
3.       The Spring Fundraiser is coming up this month! Forms will be sent home tomorrow, and they will be due on Wednesday, April 19th. The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th.
4.       On Wednesday, April 12th, Mme. Stella is taking the students on their French trip.
