Hello Parents!
Today the students started off
their morning with Gym. Once we got back to class, we began our UOI summative
presentations. After lunch, we continued the presentations, and then students
(aka “the new citizens,”) got to vote on a government for the “new island.”
Overall, the presentations were done quite well, and I gave them all feedback
about what they did well, and what they could improve on. See below for pictures!
Shortly after, the
students got ready and Mr. Oliver took them to watch the grade 6 exhibition
presentations (in preparation for their showcase tomorrow!). The students had second
break, and then they had French right after. Upon arriving back to back, they
filled out their agendas, and then we had a quick trial run for the spelling bee. A lot of students were purposely being silly and spelling words incorrectly (to make their classmates laugh), so we stopped after 2 rounds. I handed out the
summative rubrics (please sign and return!), and then the students got ready to
go home.
Just a few
important notes before I go:
1. Math: Unit 10 math tests were handed
back- please sign and return them!
2. Novel Study: read chapter 18 and write
a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these
journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3. UOI: Summative rubrics were handed back- please sign and return them!
4. Spelling: Lesson #26 test will be
TOMORROW (Friday, May 5th).The words are up on the blog!
5. The grade 6’s will be presenting their
Exhibition projects TOMORROW (Friday, May 5th). They will put on
two presentations, from a) 9am-11am, and b) 6pm- 8pm. Please come by to check
them out, as the grade 5’s will be doing Exhibition projects next year too. It
will be a great glance into what next year will be like for them!
6. A
few more P.E. trips have been added
to the Grade 5 list.
a)
Squash:
Monday, May 8th. We will
leave at 1:30pm, and will be back before the end of the school day. Please note
that 2 instructors will help the students at the beginning of the lesson, and
they will teach them about the basic concepts, as well as all of the safety
precautions. Also, students are to
wear their St. Jude’s Academy athletic attire, and running shoes.
b)
Tree Top
Trekking- Friday, June 2nd. I will post more details as soon as
I get some.
7. Starting next week, we will have Hatch
Canada come to our classroom, to teach the students about coding! Coding is
our last UOI topic! Hatch will be with us every Wednesday for the month of May.
It is important that your child is present for these lessons, in order to pass
this unit. The fee is covered by the school, as this is a new Unit of Inquiry.
We are looking forward to learning all about coding!
8. SJA Annual Shakespeare Play (Revenge of the
Shrew) will be put on by the MYP students on Wednesday, May 10th!
Doors open at 7pm, and the show begins at 7:30pm!
9. The Spring Fundraiser trip will be on
Thursday, May 11th, from 9am to 11am. (Please note: students who
do not raise at least $35 will not be able to attend the trip. They will sit in
with another class at the school while we are away that day- it is only for a
few hours in the morning, so please send your child to school, as we will still
be doing work in the afternoon).
10. The
SJA Spelling Bee is fast
approaching! The outline, rules, and in-class spelling words have been sent
home- please review it AND PRACTICE
with your child. Our grade 5 in-class competition will take place on Monday, May 8th, starting at
9am. The students in Grade 5 that are
spelling the grade 6 words (based on their spelling book level) will complete
with the grade 6’s on Thursday, May 11th at 12:40pm. Please make
sure your child is ON TIME for these days. The winning candidates will
go on to participate in front of the school on Tuesday, May 16th, at 9am. Winners from that will go on
to face the winners from The Maples, as well as the winners from Sunnybrook
School (a school in Toronto). Any questions regarding the spelling bee can be
directed to Ms. Chang, at vchang@stjudesacademy.com
11. Track and Field day will be on Friday, May
12th!! Freezies will be sold that day for $2, and all proceeds
will go towards new gym equipment!
12. Due
to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00
for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!
13. The lunch ordering system is now open for June. Please ensure you place
your order no later than Friday, May
19th at 4:00pm. Lunch payment is due by May 23rd 4:00 or unfortunately your
lunch order will be cancelled for the month of June. Please keep in mind that
there are no reimbursements for field trips or absences. You can go online
at http://mydigitalmailroom.com/sja/
14. I will begin my term 3 phone calls soon. I have sent
out forms, so please review it, and let me know if you prefer a phone call, an
email, or an in-person meeting. I would appreciate if all forms can be filled
out and returned BEFORE MONDAY, MAY 8TH!
15. The Grade 5 class will be
contributing to the bake sale this
month. On Tuesday, May 30th, students in our class are welcome to
bring in NUT FREE items to sell during lunch time. All contributions are

That pretty much sums it up for today. I hope everyone has a
wonderful evening!
