Hello Parents!

Today we started off the morning with math. We took up our lesson #8 (relating capacity and volume) homework, and then I introduced lesson #9 (measuring mass). As a class, we used examples on the whiteboard, and talked about everyday experiences (that relates to measuring mass). For homework, students must complete P# 90-91 in their math workbook. Following math, the students then got into their UOI groups, and worked on their summative. I went around to each group, and went over all three parts with them. I reviewed their work, and asked them to explain their examples, as well as their experiment/ demonstration. Most groups have used their time wisely, and are fully ready to present on Thursday. Some groups need a few minor adjustments, but I know everyone will be ready for Thursday.

After lunch the students had language, and we talked about SJA’s Annual Oral Competition. I handed out the outline and the rubric, and we discussed the main points on it. I asked the students to write down that they have 3-4 minutes for their speech, but they actually have 3-5 minutes. I will remind them on Thursday to make these changes. Parents must sign the front page of the outline, just so they know what is going on. I also printed off the whole package, and handed these out to the students (and attached them to the outline and rubric). Please read over it with your child.

The students  then got ready for gym, and headed outside with Mr. O (the gym teacher). I believe today was the last day of exams, so we should be getting back our use of the gym!

After 2nd break the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We talked about Year Ahead Day (which is tomorrow), and I reminded the students that it is casual day! Although students won’t be with me tomorrow, I still advise for them to complete their homework tonight, as I will be checking it on Thursday!

Just a few notes before I go:
1.       Math workbook, P# 90-91 (lesson 9: measuring mass).
2.       There will be a bake sale tomorrow.. Feel free to send some change with your children, so they can purchase some yummy treats!
3.       YEAR AHEAD DAY is TOMORROW!! Students will spend the day following the schedule of the grade ahead, and will also get that teacher for the day! The Grade 5’s will be with Mrs. Haag for the day! (Lucky them!!). Please note that teachers with your children for Year Ahead Day, may not actually be their teachers for the upcoming school year.
4.       Tomorrow is CASUAL DAY!!
5.       UOI final summative is due this THURSDAY, JANUARY 26th. This means all groups will present their display (part 1), verbally tell us about 3 changes in states (part 2), and will show us an experiment/ demonstration (part 3). Please look at their assignment outline, rubric and success criteria, if you would like to know more about it.
6.       Students should read for at least 30 minutes. We will be starting our new novel study book in the near future, so until then, students should be reading anything of their choice, daily.
7.       Please sign your child’s Lesson #16 spelling test. Also, we will have our LESSON #17 SPELLING TEST THIS FRIDAY. The words are up on the blog!
8.       Mme. Stella has mentioned that the students will have their FRENCH TEST this Friday (January 27th).
9.       The lunch order forms are now being completed online! The due date for February lunches will be THIS FRIDAY (JANUARY 27TH).  Please look at the instructions at the end of this blog, and contact bsmith@stjudesacademy.com if you need extra information (or help) with this new process.
10.   Re-registration packages were sent home last month. If you are interested in registering your child at St. Jude’s Academy again next year (and I hope you are!), please be sure to fill out and send back the packages AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The deadline for these packages will be February 9th, and then after that date, spaces open up to the public. So, please don’t wait until last minute to make these important decisions!
11.   There will be no soccer practice for the boys soccer team until sometime in March. I have yet to get the final details, but I was told it will be postponed until the field condition is suitable and safe enough for practice.
12.   Lastly, SJA’s Annual Poems and Speeches Competition is quickly approaching! The grade 5 class will be reciting their speeches in front of the grade 6 class, and the winners from that will go on to the schoolwide competition on Friday, February 24th. The winners from that will go on to face the winners from The Maples on March 1st. I have sent home the outline, rubric and package, so please take a look at it with your child. Also, please remember to sign off on the front page!

That sums it up for today. I hope everyone has a great experience for Year Ahead Day tomorrow, and I will see the students again on Thursday! I will still write a quick blog tomorrow, just reminding students and parents about the important information coming up. I hope everyone has a wonderful night!
