Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Math! I introduced lesson #2 (Calculating Probability), and then we went through many examples on the whiteboard. Together as a class, we completed the textbook work together, and I thoroughly explained each question and how we find the answer to it. After, the students got ready and we began our day of Track and Field Activities. This continued after lunch, and at the end of the scheduled events, the students were able to purchase freezies!

They came back inside after, and got ready for a quick French class. The students filled out their agendas when they got back to class, and then they got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:
1. Track and Field day was today, and the finalists (boys and girls) will face the finalists from the Maples on Friday, May 26th. More details to come.
2. UOI: KWL Chart on Coding- just complete the first two columns (what you Know, what you Want to know).
3. Math: lesson #2, workbook p# 158-159.
4. Novel Study: no homework.
5. We have one more P.E. trip that the grade 5’s will be participating in- Tree Top Trekking- Friday, June 2nd. I will post more details as soon as I get some.
6. We had Hatch Canada come to our classroom to teach the students about coding! Coding is our last UOI topic! Hatch will be with us every Wednesday for the month of May. It is important that your child is present for these lessons, as they will be teaching important concepts. The fee is covered by the school, as this is a new Unit of Inquiry. We are looking forward to learning all about coding!
7. The SJA Spelling Bee is fast approaching! We already had our Grade 5 in-class spelling bee, and narrowed it down to the top 6 students- congratulations to Jarniko and Emilia for achieving a spot! The grade 6 spellers had their in-class spelling bee with Mrs. Haag’s class. Congratulations to Lucas, Mehar, Nikhil and Nicole for making it in the top 6! The winning candidates will go on to participate in front of the school on Tuesday, May 16th, at 9am. Winners from that will go on to face the winners from The Maples, as well as the winners from Sunnybrook School (a school in Toronto). Any questions regarding the spelling bee can be directed to Ms. Chang, at vchang@stjudesacademy.com
8. Due to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00 for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!
9. The lunch ordering system is now open for June. Please ensure you place your order no later than Friday, May 19th at 4:00pm. Lunch payment is due by May 23rd 4:00 or unfortunately your lunch order will be cancelled for the month of June. Please keep in mind that there are no reimbursements for field trips or absences. You can go online at http://mydigitalmailroom.com/sja/
10. I have completed my term 3 phone calls this week. Thank you to those who filled out and returned the forms so promptly. If you did not mention a preferred form of contact, I will be sending out an email with a quick update on your child’s progress early next week.
11. There is no school on Friday, May 19th and Monday, May 22nd.
12. The Grade 5 class will be contributing to the bake sale this month. On Tuesday, May 30th, students in our class are welcome to bring in NUT FREE items to sell during lunch time. All contributions are appreciated!

That pretty much sums it up for today. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful Mom’s out there!

Hello Parents!
Today we started off our morning with our Spring Fundraiser Trip! Those who raised $35 or more attended a trip to play Laser Tag, and the remaining students stayed at school with Mrs. Haag (the grade 6 teacher). I was with the students on the trip, and I must say, it was tons of fun! The students really enjoyed themselves.

When we got back to school, we had lunch, and then the students had Music. After, 5 students from our  class joined Mrs. Haag’s class for the Grade 6 in-class spelling bee, and the rest of the grade 5’s worked on an activity. The students stopped working, and then got ready for second break. After, they headed to French, and then filled out their agendas when they got back to class. After, I did a homework check for their novel study journal (chapter 21), and then they continued working on their activity until it was time to go home.

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, we took up the math homework and then they worked on an activity until Hatch came. Once the coaches arrived, they assigned a laptop and username to each student, and then they gave then an introduction on the program. The students were free to test it out, and create various codes for different games. After lunch, we continued our workshop with Hatch (making it a two hour workshop instead of one, to make up for the issue last week), and the students were given individual instructions by one of the three coaches. The students, whether experienced or brand new to this, all seemed to enjoy exploring the basics of coding! For next week, the students were asked to attempt “PseudoCode,” by logging into their account from any computer/ laptop/ tablet at home. (www.hatchcanada.com). They can also check out www.hatchcanada.com/hints for some cool tips.

After second break, the students got ready to watch the Shakespeare Play in the auditorium. It was very entertaining, and very well done! Remember, there will also be a presentation of this play later tonight (at 7pm), so feel free to come see it!

After the play, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We worked on an activity (and I did a homework check for their novel study journal), and then they packed up and got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Music. After, they completed their OWA’s, DRA’s and any outstanding work. After lunch, they continued these tasks, and then got ready for Gym. When they got back to class, I introduced the new math unit (Unit #11- Probability), by teaching them about Lesson #1 (The likelihood of events).

After second break, the students had French, and then filled out their agendas when they got back to class. Following that, I did a homework check for their novel study journals, and then we talked about Arts Night. I advised the students to check again for songs from the 2000’s to 2009, and we will share it with the class tomorrow. Arts Night is less than one month away! Shortly after this discussion, the students got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with the Grade 5 In-Class Spelling Bee! We had a few grade 4 students join us (because they do grade 5 spelling words), and the students in our class that does grade 6 words just watched the spelling bee take place. I was quite disappointed when many grade 5 students deliberately spelled words wrong, just so they could be out. As a result, the students that actually took this competition seriously were able to make it further. The following students were the top 6 winners in our grade 5 in-class spelling bee:

1st place: Chelsea
2nd place: Saanvi
3rd place: Tristan
4th place: Jarniko
5th place: Emilia
6th place: Klara

Well done to those top 6 students, as well as all of the students that participated properly!

After lunch, the students worked on their self/ peer evaluation for their UOI summative, and then completed their KWL Chart for our Government Unit. I administered the last few DRA’s, and some students also used this time to complete theirs. After, the students got ready for Gym, and then following that, Mr. O. took them for their squash trip. When they came back to school, they had a quick snack, and then got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       UOI: KWL Chart must be completed
2.       Math: Unit 10 math tests were handed back- please sign and return them!
3.       Novel Study: read chapter 19 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!

Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Once we got back to class, we began our UOI summative presentations. After lunch, we continued the presentations, and then students (aka “the new citizens,”) got to vote on a government for the “new island.” Overall, the presentations were done quite well, and I gave them all feedback about what they did well, and what they could improve on. See below for pictures!

Shortly after, the students got ready and Mr. Oliver took them to watch the grade 6 exhibition presentations (in preparation for their showcase tomorrow!). The students had second break, and then they had French right after. Upon arriving back to back, they filled out their agendas, and then we had a quick trial run for the spelling bee. A lot of students were purposely being silly and spelling words incorrectly (to make their classmates laugh), so we stopped after 2 rounds.  I handed out the summative rubrics (please sign and return!), and then the students got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Unit 10 math tests were handed back- please sign and return them!
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 18 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: Summative rubrics were handed back- please sign and return them!
4.       Spelling: Lesson #26 test will be TOMORROW (Friday, May 5th).The words are up on the blog!
5.       The grade 6’s will be presenting their Exhibition projects TOMORROW (Friday, May 5th). They will put on two presentations, from a) 9am-11am, and b) 6pm- 8pm. Please come by to check them out, as the grade 5’s will be doing Exhibition projects next year too. It will be a great glance into what next year will be like for them!
6.       A few more P.E. trips have been added to the Grade 5 list.
a)       Squash: Monday, May 8th. We will leave at 1:30pm, and will be back before the end of the school day. Hello Parents!
Today the students started off their morning with their Unit 10 Math test! Once they were finished, they were allowed to quietly work on their UOI summative. At the end of this period, we got ready for Hatch, but unfortunately, they did not show up. Upon contacting the coordinator, it was determined that there was a scheduling problem, although I received a confirmation form for all of our days booked. They were very apologetic, and added another workshop to our list, as well as a free session that the students can use at their Oakville centre (I’ll post more details once I find out about it from them). The students used the extra time to work on their UOI summatives, and then they got ready for lunch.
After lunch, we worked on our novel study, and read chapter 17 together as a class. After a brief discussion, the students then got into their UOI groups and spent the remaining hour working on their summative. After second break, the students had French, and then they quickly filled out their agendas upon arriving back in class. I handed out their marked math tests (I used all of my preps and break times today to mark them!), and then reminded them they parents must sign and return it. The students packed up, and headed to the gym, where Mr. O. took them outside for their Gym period. After that, it was home time!
Just a few important notes before I go:
1.       Math: Unit 10 math tests were handed back- please sign and return them!
2.       Novel Study: read chapter 17 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Please make sure these journal entries are at least one page, and are written in cursive writing!
3.       UOI: Summatives are due TOMORROW, and all groups will be presenting. Just a reminder, for all students using technology (powerpoint, videos, etc.), please remember to put it on a USB, so I can play it from my laptop, which will be hooked up to the tv.
4.       Spelling: Lesson #26 test will be on Friday, May 5th! The words are up on the blog!
5.       A few more P.E. trips have been added to the Grade 5 list.
a)       Squash: Monday, May 8th. We will leave at 1:30pm, and will be back before the end of the school day. Please note that 2 instructors will help the students at the beginning of the lesson, and they will teach them about the basic concepts, as well as all of the safety precautions. Also, students are to wear their St. Jude’s Academy athletic attire, and running shoes.
b)      Tree Top Trekking- Friday, June 2nd. I will post more details as soon as I get some.
6.       Starting next week, we will have Hatch Canada come to our classroom, to teach the students about coding! Coding is our last UOI topic! Hatch will be with us every Wednesday for the month of May. It is important that your child is present for these lessons, in order to pass this unit. The fee is covered by the school, as this is a new Unit of Inquiry. We are looking forward to learning all about coding!
7.       The grade 6’s will be presenting their Exhibition projects on Friday, May 5th. They will put on two presentations, from a) 9am-11am, and b) 6pm- 8pm. Please come by to check them out, as the grade 5’s will be doing Exhibition projects next year too. It will be a great glance into what next year will be like for them!
8.       SJA Annual Shakespeare Play (Revenge of the Shrew) will be put on by the MYP students on Wednesday, May 10th! Doors open at 7pm, and the show begins at 7:30pm!
9.       The Spring Fundraiser trip will be on Thursday, May 11th, from 9am to 11am. (Please note: students who do not raise at least $35 will not be able to attend the trip. They will sit in with another class at the school while we are away that day- it is only for a few hours in the morning, so please send your child to school, as we will still be doing work in the afternoon).
10.   The SJA Spelling Bee is fast approaching! The outline, rules, and in-class spelling words have been sent home- please review it AND PRACTICE with your child.
