Mountsberg Conservation Area

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with their Unit 7 math test. Once they were finished, they were given Valentine’s Day colouring sheets, to preoccupy themselves while the others finished. They were also given the option to practice reading their Speeches in their head, as a way to start memorizing them. Once all of the math tests were handed in, we had the remaining Speech presentations, and timed them as they read. Students now know whether they must add more to their Speech, or if they could start memorizing it.

After lunch, the students had Music, then Gym, and then after second break, they had French.

Upon returning back to class, the students filled out their agendas, and then packed up their stuff. We then discussed details about our trip tomorrow, and what they should bring. All students are to bring a litter-less lunch tomorrow. Also, students must be dressed warm, as they will be going outside to see habitats/ nature. With that being said, students must wear a warm jacket, snowpants, warm boots, gloves, a hat, scarf/ neckwarmer, etc. Bundle up! Lastly, since we will be outside, students do not have to wear their uniform tomorrow- they are allowed to wear WARM casual clothes (track pants, sweaters, long sleeves, etc.).

After this discussion, students handed out Valentine’s Day treats, and then the students got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       We are going on our trip TOMORROW to Mountsberg Conservation Area, to learn about Biodiversity! Please remember to pack a litter-less lunch, and dress warm!

2.       Spelling test must be signed. (Spelling test will be next week, instead of this week).

3.       Novel Study: read Chapter 9, and answer the corresponding questions.

4.       Speeches: Students must write out a complete full copy of their full speech, from introduction to conclusion. Once that is done, they are allowed to type it up. Students who need to add more information due to being under the time limit, must do so for homework.

5.       SJA’s Annual Poems and Speeches Competition is quickly approaching! The grade 5 class will be reciting their speeches in front of the grade 6 class, and the winners from that will go on to the schoolwide competition on Friday, February 24^th. The winners from that will go on to face the winners from The Maples on March 1^st. I have sent home the outline, rubric and package, so please take a look at it with your child. Students must come to school prepared (with their research and device), and should always bring all of their notes/ work.

6.       Thursday, February 16^th, we will be celebrating “100 Days of School.”  If you would like to bring in anything that fits the theme of “100,” please let me know!

7.       Parent Guild Movie and Dance Night forms and payment is due this Thursday (February 16^th).

8.       There is no school this Friday (February 17^th) and Monday (February 20^th).

9.       The MYP will be hosting a “Mock Trial” on Friday, February 24^th. To support them, the whole school is welcomed to participate in a casual day, where $2 will be collected, and students can dress up as judges, criminals, lawyers, etc. This is an optional event, but it will be fun to support the older grades during this exciting experience!

10.   The Grade 5’s and up will be going on a Ski trip on Thursday, March 2^nd, and Thursday, March 9^th.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started their day off by working on their Speeches. We started with class presentations, where students got to practice saying their speech (while reading it off of their paper), and I timed it. After each presentation, students received some feedback, whether it was to add some more information (to meet the time limit), or saying it was prefect and now they can work on memorizing it. We will continue these practice presentations all week.

After Speeches, the student got out their math books, and we had a Unit 7 review. Their test will be tomorrow morning, so I encourage the students to complete the “Show What you Know,” section in their textbook (p#250-251), for additional practice.  

After lunch we discussed Chapter 8 in the Hatchet, and went through the comprehension questions. For homework, the students must read Chapter 9, and answer the corresponding questions. After novel study, the students had Gym, and then we had a few more Speech presentations before second break.

After break, the students went to French, and then they filled out their agendas upon arriving back to class. For the last half an hour, we went over their Spelling workbook answers, and I reminded students that their spelling test for this week will be pushed to next week (since there is no school on Friday and Monday).

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       Spelling test must be signed. (Spelling test will be next week, instead of this week).

2.       Math Test tomorrow!! Unit 7 (Transformational Geometry). Students should try to complete “Show What You Know,” in their textbook for this unit, as a good study review.

3.       Novel Study: read Chapter 9, and answer the corresponding questions.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their day with Gym. Following that, they had their lesson #20 spelling test, which was followed by their Speeches. Students worked on writing their rough draft of their complete speech, from start (introduction) to finish (conclusion). Over the weekend, they can type up their speech, if it makes it easier for them to read. While they were working on this, I continued with conferences. There are only 3 students left to conference with, so this will happen on Monday.

After lunch, the students had Music, and then they worked on Math. They continued their tessellation pictures, and began a second one once that was finish. While this was happening, some students wrote their Unit 6 retest for math. These students will get their test back on Monday.

After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. We then discussed what happened in Chapter 7, as well as discussed the comprehension questions. Following this discussion, the students got a cookie for being so quite during the math period (while students were writing their test), and then they got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessment) were sent home yesterday! If you have any questions about them, please let me know and I can discuss it with you.

2.       Re-registration packages were due yesterday! Starting today, spaces open up to the public. So, if you haven’t done so already, please bring those reregistration forms back, before there are no more spaces in Grade 6 next year! There will be an open house tomorrow at St. Jude’s Academy, so spaces will be filling up!

3.       Spelling test workbook- Lesson #18, 19, 20, due on Monday.

4.       Novel Study: read Chapter 8, and answer the corresponding questions.

5.       Speeches: Students must  write out a complete rough draft of their full speech, from introduction to conclusion. Once that is done, they are allowed to type it up over the weekend. I will be checking for the handwritten copy on Monday!

Also, there cannot be any gaps or overlaps in their pattern. Their tessellation must also be coloured in a colour pattern too! Also, the Unit 7 test will be on Tuesday, February 14th.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, we had Math, and the students worked on their tessellation pictures. Many of them had to start over, because they were not paying close attention when we learned about this lesson yesterday. As a result, they had gaps/ overlaps in their patterns, which does not make it a tessellation. The students will continue working on this tomorrow, and if it is incomplete by the end of the period, it will be assigned for homework.

After math we began working on our Speeches. The introductions were due today, which allowed us to focus on the conclusions. I continued with my conferences today, and hopefully by tomorrow, they will all be done. Those who completed their whole speech began writing out a complete rough copy, with all of their edits, from start (introduction) to finish (conclusion).

After recess, the students had time to finish up their UOI Biodiversity chart papers, and then they presented their information. (Please see below for pictures!) After UOI, we discussed Chapter 6 in Hatchet, and talked about the answers to the questions. We then began reading Chapter 7, and students took turn reading out loud. We stopped many times to make connections to personal experiences, as well as used our imaginations to try to envision what Brian was going through.

After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas upon returning to class. I then handed out their DRA’s (they put them into their agendas), and then we continued reading the rest of Chapter 7 (their request!). They then packed up and headed home.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessment) were sent home today! If you have any questions about them, please let me know and I can discuss it with you.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Music. Following that, we worked on our Speeches, in which the students began to form their introduction paragraph. I went over what it should include, and gave them the remainder of the period to finish it. During this time, I continued conferencing with some students. For homework, students must complete their introduction paragraph, if they were unable to finish it in class.

After lunch, we discussed the answers to Chapter 5’s comprehension questions. We had a group discussion about what we liked and disliked so far. We also talked about being in Brian’s position, and how we would feel. Apparently a lot of students strongly believe that they would be just fine if this happened to them, and they had to survive alone. Very interesting! Following this period, the students had Gym.

Once they got back to the classroom, we took up our Math homework (lesson 4: line symmetry). I think introduced lesson #6: Exploring Tiling. We talked about tessellations, and then the students were instructed to complete their math workbook work (P#102-103). I also handed out a tessellation worksheet, and the students began to work on it. For homework, the students must complete their unfinished workbook work, but they do not have to complete the tessellation worksheet, as they will have time tomorrow in class to complete it.

After second break the students had French and then they completed their agendas when they got back to class. They had time to work on their UOI Biodiversity charts, and then they got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today we started off our day with math! We took up the homework for lesson #3, and then I taught lesson #4 (Line Symmetry). We discussed thinks in everyday life that are symmetrical, and then worked together to draw a line of symmetry on shapes on the whiteboard. Following the lesson, students were instructed to complete textbook work, and for homework they must complete P# 100-101.

After math, we worked on our Speeches. As a class, I reviewed what a counterargument was, and gave them various examples of how to link everything together. While students worked on this, I had conferences with individual students who have completed paragraph 1, 2, 3 and their counterargument. During these conferences, I read over their work, and suggested necessary changes. Tomorrow I will continue to have conferences with the students I did see today. With that being said, if students are not done their counterargument paragraph, they must complete it for homework.

After lunch we worked on our UOI Biodiversity charts, where groups continued to brainstorm ideas. After that, they had gym, then second break, and then French. Upon arriving back to class, the students filled out their agendas, and then we discussed Chapter 4 in our novel study book (Hatchet). Hello Parents!

Today the students started their day off with a class discussion about what they did this weekend. Following that, we had a special presentation in the Auditorium! Earth Rangers came to our school today, and brought along some cool animals. Needless to say, the students really enjoyed it. (Please see below for pictures). After that, the students had gym, and then lunch.

They headed to music after that, and then we worked on our Speeches when they got back to class. At this point, students should be done paragraph 1, 2 and 3 (with peer- edits). Those students who are not finished paragraph 3 must complete it for homework. Tomorrow we will be working on our counterargument paragraphs!

After second break, the students worked on their UOI group assignment task, where they are brainstorming ideas about Biodiversity on chart paper. They will be presenting these ideas in front of the class, and they will be adding to these lists throughout the unit. After that, the students got out their Novel Study book and questions/ answers, and we discussed it as a class. They were instructed to read Chapter 4 (and answer the questions) for homework.

To wrap up our day, the students filled out their agendas, and I handed our numerous things. They received a trip form (details below), a movie night flyer, an Earth Ranger card, their Unit 6 math test, and their UOI (matter) summative rubric. These last two must be signed and returned.

Hello Parents!

Today we off our day with our lesson #19 spelling test. Following that, we took up our math homework, and I introduced our new lesson (#3- Congruent Figures). I explained what the key concepts were, and then answered any questions the students had. They were instructed to complete their textbook work (in-class), and then I assigned their workbook (P#98-99) for homework. After math, the students began working on their Speeches. Everyone in the class has completed paragraph 1 and 2, and it has been peer-edited by at 1 or 2 classmates. On Monday, students will have some class time, to work on paragraph 3, but by the end of the period, it should be complete, along with their peer-edits.

After lunch, the students worked in their groups, and began brainstorming ideas about Biodiversity. They were given chart paper, and instructed to create a web/chart/list, to show what they already know. They will be adding to these lists throughout this unit. (They will be displayed on the wall, by our UOI board).

After that, the students had gym, and then we worked on our novel study when they got back to class.  The students discussed their Chapter 2 comprehension questions in their groups, and then we took it up as a class. For homework, the students are to read Chapter 3, and answer the questions that go along with it.

8.       SJA’s Annual Poems and Speeches Competition is quickly approaching! The grade 5 class will be reciting their speeches in front of the grade 6 class, and the winners from that will go on to the schoolwide competition on Friday, February 24^th. The winners from that will go on to face the winners from The Maples on March 1^st. I have sent home the outline, rubric and package, so please take a look at it with your child. Students must come to school prepared (with their research and device), and should always bring all of their notes/ work.

9.       DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessment) will be sent home on Thursday,  February 9^th, so look out for that!

10.   Thursday, February 16^th, we will be celebrating “100 Days of School.”  If you would like to bring in anything that fits the theme of “100,” please let me know!

11.   Lastly, I would like to thank the parents who filled out and returned the Parent- Teacher Communication form so promptly. Based on the your requests, I will either be phoning, emailing, or meeting with you in-person (on the day you put as your first option). For the parents who will be meeting me in-person, your date/ time is confirmed. For the parents who want an email, I will be sending them once I mark the final Unit 6 math test, so those marks can be discussed too. Those parents who would like a phone call, I will begin making my calls around 11am TOMORROW (Saturday, February 4^th).  If you have plans, and would like to request a specific time, please send me an email, and I will try my best to fit it in. Again, these calls will be as brief as possible, as I’m sure you all have better things to do, than talk to me! Nonetheless, everyone will be hearing from me tomorrow! St. Jude’s Academy

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with gym. Upon arriving back to class, we took up our lesson 1 homework, and I taught them about lesson 2: Transformations. They completed their workbook (P#96-97) in class, and were given a worksheet for homework. The workbook questions are also for homework, if they were not done in class. After math, we moved onto UOI, and I handed out a worksheet, in which we will work on throughout this unit. The students answered the first question (What is Biodiversity?), and then I read them an introduction paragraph, stating information about Biodiversity. Many students appeared confused, so, I will be breaking down this unit to the simplest way possible. I informed the students that were will be a lot of confusing terms and categories in this unit, so they really need to pay attention, so they won’t be lost. I will try my best to keep it as interesting as possible.

After lunch, the students worked on their Speeches, and got their classmates to peer- edit their first paragraph. Students who do not have paragraph 1 complete are now behind, and will have to complete it for homework. Tomorrow, paragraph 2 will be due, so students can make sure they’re ready by having their notes organized.

After that, the students had Music, second break, and then French. Once they came back to the classroom, they filled out their agendas, and then we worked on our new Novel Study. In their groups students discussed their answers for Chapter 1, and then we shared them as a class. We started reading Chapter 2, but had to stop, due to time. Students must finish reading Chapter 2, and should answer the corresponding questions (it is due tomorrow).  

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       Math homework: p# 96-97 in their workbook AND lesson 2 worksheet.

2.       Novel Study: read Chapter 2, and answer the 4 corresponding questions.

3.       Speeches: the rough draft for paragraph 2 is due tomorrow. Students will have some time to finish it in class, and they will be peer editing each others tomorrow.

4.       Spelling Test (Lesson #19) is TOMORROW! (Words are on the blog!)

5.       Mme. Stella has sent home permission forms for a French trip. Please sign and return these forms and hand in the money as soon as possible, as spaces are limited. These forms are due by Friday, February 10^th. Also, there is a French spelling test TOMORROW, and Mme. Stella has asked the students to finish their sentence (they can refer to her blog).

6.       Re-registration packages were sent home last month.
