Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with UOI. As a whole class, we discussed the three levels of government, and the leaders in each sector. After, we discussed the responsibilities in each level of government, and talked about possible reasons why they fall into those categories. I then handed out a few worksheets, and told the students that they are to be completed over the long weekend. After UOI, we took up the lesson #9 math homework, and then I introduced lesson #10 (Estimating Area). We discussed the main concepts and strategies, and then went through examples together.  After, we did a complete review of Unit 9, in preparation for their unit test on Tuesday (April 18^th). I offered to work with students during recess, but unfortunately no one took me up on that offer.

After lunch, the students had Music, and then they had Gym. Following second break, they had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. I came around and checked their Chapter 6 novel study journal, and collected their protest poster. I reminded the students to take all of their books for the weekend, and then I handed out a little Easter gift (see below for a picture!). The students stacked their chairs, and then got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       Math: Lesson #10 workbook homework P# 144-145. The Unit 9 math test will be on Tuesday, April 18^th. I strongly recommend that students complete the “Show What You Know” pages at the end of their chapter- P#344-345 in their textbook. Also, unit 8 retests were handed back yesterday, so please sign them and return them by tomorrow.

2.       Novel Study: read chapter 7 and write a corresponding journal entry (topic of your choice). Protest posters were due today, but students have until Tuesday to submit it.

3.       There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 14^th, and Monday, April 17^th, as it is Easter Long Weekend.

4.       Spring Uniforms can be worn, starting on Tuesday, April 18^th.

5.       The Spring Fundraiser forms were recently sent home, and they will be due on Wednesday, April 19th. The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28th.

6.       Friday, April 21^st is Earth Day, and students are encouraged to dress up in Earth colours.

7.       Due to the amount of lost items, the school is promoting iron-on name labels! They cost $5.00 for 15 labels- I can provide the order form, if you are interested!

Easter gifts for the grade 5's! Have an "egg" -cellent long weekend!!

Hello Parents!

Today we started off our morning with Math. We took up the lesson #8 homework, and then I introduced lesson #9 (Finding the area of an irregular polygon). We went through a few examples together on the whiteboard, and then the students were instructed to answer a few questions in their groups. We discussed these answers together once they were done. We then moved on to our Novel Study book, and the students shared their journal entries with their group members. Together, we read chapter 6, and then the students were given a blank piece of paper. They were instructed to create a protest poster, as if they were a student at the school in the book. If this wasn’t completed in class, it must be finished for homework.

We then got ready and headed out for recess, and then had lunch. While the students were eating, I put on a movie (Finding Dory), which helped with the noise level (since other classes were still in session). After lunch, we all got ready and headed out on the French Trip. It was a great experience, and the students really seemed to enjoy it!

When we got back to class, students ate their snack/remaining lunch, and continued watching the movie. While it was on, they also had time to work on their protest poster. Students who finished their poster was even able to start/ finish their journal entry for chapter 6! Well done! The students then filled out their agendas, and got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, we took up our lesson 7 math homework, and then I introduced lesson 8 (Calculating the Area of a Rectangle). We went through examples on the whiteboard, and then students were free to complete their math textbook work. After math, two grade 6 students came to our classroom to do a presentation on their exhibition topic. They shared a powerpoint, and had the students engage in a debate. Then, the students headed out for lunch.

Once lunch was done, the students had Music, and then we had Novel Study. They shared their journal entries, and then we read Chapter 5 as a class. We got ready for second break, and then the students had French right after. When they got back to class, they filled out their agendas, and I handed out their Spring Fundraiser packages. These forms will be due on Wednesday, April 19^th.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. When they got back to class, some of the students worked on their math retest, and others began working on a report writing package. This will help with their understanding of how to write an expository piece, like the one they have to write for their OWA for Term 3. I also had a few Grade 6 level spellers help with marking the spelling tests that were done while I was absent last week. Following this, the students got ready for lunch.

After, the students got into their UOI groups, and we had our last debate about why their country (and style of government) is better than the rest. Overall, this was a great hands on experience, for both the students and myself. After the debate, the students got ready for second break. When they got back, they headed to French, and then filled out their agendas in class. We then took up our lesson 6 math homework, and I introduced lesson #7 (Calculating the perimeter of a rectangle). We went through a few examples on the board, and then went through a few textbook examples. A short while after, the students got ready to go home.

1.       Math: Lesson #7 workbook homework P# 138-139. The Unit 9 math test will be on Tuesday, April 18^th.

2.       Novel Study: no novel study homework today. Students are to make sure they have read up to chapter 4, and have a corresponding journal entry. I will be marking them!

3.       The Spring Fundraiser is coming up this month! Forms will be sent home tomorrow, and they will be due on Wednesday, April 19^th. The pledge forms will be due on Friday, April 28^th.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their day with the SJA and Oakwood Talent Show! We headed to the auditorium, and watched the amazing acts! After, we headed back to class and had a quick UOI debate about the countries the students created.

After lunch, we discussed chapter 3, and some of the students read their journal entry. As a class, we read chapter 4, and then got ready for gym. When we got back to class, we had our lesson #25 spelling test. After second break, the students went to French, and then they filled out their agendas when we got back to class. Following that, we took up the lesson #5 homework, and then I introduced lesson #6 (Measuring to find perimeter). After doing an example on the board, the students discussed their answer in their groups, and then they packed up and got ready to go home.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       Math: Lesson #6 workbook homework P# 136-137. The Unit 8 math retest for students who failed (below 60%) will be on Monday, April 10^th. Please make sure your child studies over the weekend!

2.       Novel Study: Read chapter 4, and write a journal entry about this chapter. This entry can be about what you read, and your feelings and thoughts on it. You can make connections, and predictions. Remember, each entry must be at least 1 page, and it should be written in cursive writing!

3.       On Wednesday, April 12^th, Mme. Stella is taking the students on their French trip.

4.       Thursday, April 13^th is Easter Spirit Day, so students are encouraged to dress up in an Easter related outfit!

Hello Parents!

Sorry for the delayed blog! I just finished Parent-Teacher interviews, and wanted to post this before I go home! It was nice seeing most of you today, and I hope the feedback can help your child become more successful in term 3!

Today the students started off their morning with math. We took up the math homework, and then I introduced lesson #5 (Using grids to find perimeter and area). As a class, we went through examples in the textbook, and then discussed the answers to the corresponding questions. After math, we discussed chapter 2 in our Novel Study book, and then some students volunteered to read their journal entries. Following this, we headed down to the auditorium for Oakwood’s Cultural Market and Talent Show (look below for pictures).

After lunch, the students worked on their UOI assignment, and continued creating details for their made up country. After second break, the students introduced their countries, and then we began our debate about which country (based on their style of government), was better. Lots of great ideas were shared, and wonderful rebuttals were stated. We will continue this debate when we have UOI again. After that, the students got ready to go home.

We've had a busy morning! Aside from learning math and doing our novel study, we also attended Oakwood's Cultural Market! Lots of tasty treats and cool toys were purchased. Also, we watched their entertaining Talent Show!

For UOI, students were focused on creating their countries! At the end of the day, the groups had a debate about which country was the best. It was a fun day!

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Math! We took up with homework, and I reviewed the key concepts from lesson 3. I then introduced lesson #4 (Measuring distance around a circular object). I showed them an in-class example, using a ball, a string, and a ruler. After, we went through a few questions together from the textbook. After Math, the students got out their UOI folders, and we reviewed the content we went over yesterday. During this period, I had my Teacher Evaluation completed by another Teacher, but the students didn’t even seem to be bothered by another person in our classroom. After the review, I divided the students up into 4 groups, and each group was assigned a style of government (Autocracy, Oligarchy, Democracy, and Theocracy). With this information, they were to work together in their groups to create a country, and they were free to be as creative as possible. As I walked around to each group, I heard many great ideas. Tomorrow, we will continue where we left off, and then the students will have a debate about why their country (and their government style) is best. It’s going to be a rather interesting debate!

After UOI, the students had Gym, and then they got ready for lunch. Following that, they had Music, and then we discussed chapter 1 from our Novel Study book. It appears that the students are really interested about how the rest of the book will play out, so I hope they continue to maintain their level of enthusiasm! We read Chapter 2 together, and then I told them their journal entry must focus on Shannen’s experiences/ traditions, and relate it to their own cultural/ family traditions. After Novel Study, the students got ready for second break, and then they had French right after. They filled out their agendas upon returning to class, and then we discussed Report Writing (the topic of our OWA this term). I also handed out their Unit 8 Math test, and told them the retest will be on MONDAY, APRIL 10^TH. (Please sign and return their math test). After, the students got ready to go home.

 IMPORTANT NOTE: due to the amount of missing uniform pieces, please make sure your child has their items labeled, with a first and last name. It will save all of us the headache in the future!

Hello Parents!

Today we started off our morning with inquiry into Government. I introduced the lesson by reading a story called, “Life in Troll Country,” and asked the students to talk about it in their groups. As a whole class, we discussed their ideas, and then talked about what it would be like living there, compared to living here (in Canada). Following our discussion, I introduced four types of government styles: Autocracy, Oligarchy, Democracy, and Theocracy. We discussed each of them, and talked about what it would be like living under each of these governments. We then talked about the three levels of government in Canada: Federal (all of Canada), Provincial (individual Provinces/ Territories), and Municipal (Cities/ Towns). We learned the names of the leaders in each level (Federal= Prime Minister = Justin Trudeau, Provincial= Premier = Kathleen Wynne, Municipal= Mayor (of Mississauga)= Bonnie Crombie). To conclude, I showed the students two Youtube videos, both in which helped to support the content taught with more specific details (and catchy songs!).

After lunch, we took up our lesson #2 math homework, and then I introduced lesson #3 (Using Non- Standard Units to Estimate Lengths). We worked through the textbook questions together, and then we played a game, identifying standard units and non-standard units. After, the students got ready for Gym.

When they got back from Gym, I handed out their new Novel Study book (Shannen and the Dream for a School by Janet Wilson), and we discussed the cover and back of the book. They left their book on their desk, and then got ready for second break. The students had French after that, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. After, we had time to read the Author’s Note, and the Prologue in the Novel Study book, and had a discussion about what we read. Following that, the students got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

First and foremost, I would like to thank those Parents who sent an email or wrote a card, expressing their sympathies. Your kind words are greatly appreciated, and I am thankful for your sincerity. Last Friday was an emotional day, but I was fortunate to be surrounding by my family, as we reminisced about the all of the great memories we shared with my Mom. I hope all of you remember that tomorrow is not guaranteed, so always express your love and gratitude while you still have opportunities to. It’s the little things that count the most!

Moving forward, the students started off their Monday morning with Gym. Following that, we came back to class, and I gave them their new seating arrangement. We then debriefed about Friday- how their day went, and how mine went too. After, I handed out their term 3 OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment), and went over the requirements. The students completed this independently, and then they got ready for lunch.   

In the afternoon, we took up our math homework, and I reviewed the main concepts from lesson #1. I then introduced lesson #2 (Relating units of measurement), and the students were instructed to complete the corresponding textbook work. After math, the students had Music, and then they had second break.

They had French after, and filled out their agendas when they got back to class. I handed out the Parent-Teacher interview sheets (stating Parents’ scheduled timeslots), and then then allowed students to finish up their OWA, if they needed a bit more time. I collected them 20 minutes after, and then the students got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today the students start off their morning with Novel Study presentations! Names were pulled out of a bucket, and students stood in front of the class and spoke about their project. I was able to complete their rubric as they presented, so they will be sent home today. Please sign and return them tomorrow. Following the presentations, we set up the desks (the same way we had them for the Science Fair), and placed the projects around the classroom.

After lunch, classes came by our classroom to see our projects, and the students got the opportunity to explain their projects. (See below for a few pictures). Once that period was done, the students went outside for gym, and then they had second break. They had French following that, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. At the end of the day, the Grade 6’s came by to see our projects, and then the students got ready to go home.

I let the students know that I will not be in tomorrow, as March 31^st marks one year since my Mom passed away. I will be with my family tomorrow, so I may not have access to my email. Should you need to contact me, send me an email, and I will try my best to reply over the weekend. Regardless, the Supply Teacher for tomorrow will have my lesson plan, and they will distribute the report cards at the end of the day.

If you are having an issue logging in this may mean your account has been frozen because you have an outstanding balance due. Please contact bsmith@stjudesacademy.com if you have any questions. Please keep in mind that we do not reimburse for absent days or field trips.  Orders must be placed by TOMORROW (Fri. March 31^st) at 4pm and payments must be received by Monday April 3rd in order to process your lunch order.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with a unit 9 math pretest. Once they were done, they were instructed to independently work on their novel study project. I pulled students one by one to update their IB Portfolio, and they were asked to take their leftover Biodiversity work home.

After lunch, the students filled out a KWL Chart about Government (their new UOI topic), and put it into their UOI duotang. They left for gym, and then they continued working on their novel study project when they came back.

After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. After, some students put their final touches on their project, and the remaining students played a brain teaser game. Shortly after, they got ready to go home.

1.       Novel Study: the final project is due TOMORROW, and they will be presenting their projects in front of the class. Presentations will begin at 9am- please make sure your child is on time!

2.       Wednesday (March 29^th) is casual day.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. Following that, they wrote their Unit 8 Math test when they got back to class. Once they finished their test, they were allowed to work on their Novel Study project. I am pretty impressed with the creativity being displayed!

After lunch the students had Music, and then they continued working on their Novel Study project. After second break, the students had French, and then they filled out their agendas when they got back to class. After having a discussion about the Novel Study project, we then played a quick charades game. Before we knew it, it was home time.

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       UOI:  Thank you to the Parents who signed and returned the rubric for their child’s final summative project. I would appreciate it if those who did not sign it, please sign it and return it tomorrow.

2.       Novel Study: Students have begin working on their final project. Tomorrow is the last day they  have in class to complete it. Please make sure your child brings all the materials they need to class. The project will be due on Thursday, March 30^th, and they will be presenting their project that day.

3.       Wednesday (March 29^th) is casual day.

Hello Parents!

I hope everyone enjoyed their March Break! Each student shared what they did during the last two weeks, and it seemed like everyone really made the most out of their time! I had a great time visiting family in Trinidad, and I even got to relax on the beach in Tobago! Needless to say, I had a great March Break! Only a few more months left until summer break, so it’s time to get back to the hard work!

Today the students started off their morning with Gym. When they got back to class, the students shared stories about what they did during March Break, and talked about their favourite part of it. Following that, they got out their novel study project, and began working on their creations. We will be working on this for the next two days, and then it will be due on Thursday. REMINDER: please make sure your child comes to school with materials for their project. I had a few students today who brought nothing, and they were forced to work with the limited supplies we have in class. A trip to the Dollar Store might be beneficial.

After lunch, the students worked on their KWL chart, as well as their Biodiversity worksheet. These sheets are homework, if students didn’t complete them in class. I then handed back their final summative, and they had the opportunity to compare it to their marked rubric. Students were given the opportunity to discuss their marks one-on-one, and I explained why they got the scores they did. PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN THE SUMMATIVE RUBRIC.  

After UOI, the students worked on their math review, in preparation for their Unit 8 test tomorrow. I discussed each lesson, and talked about the key concepts. I also went over types of questions that will be on the test, so students should have a general idea about what to focus on (if they were paying attention!).

After second break, the students had French, and then they filled in their agendas when they got back to class. Students were asked to clean out their bins, and then we played a game with the few minutes remaining. After that, the students got ready to go home.

Hello Parents!

Today the students started off their morning with Music. Following that, we took up our math homework, and then I gave the students a math review. They were instructed to complete the “Show What You Know” section in their textbook (P#300-301). I suggest that they complete this, as well as the “Cumulative Review” (P#304-305) in their textbook, as it will be good practice for the test. Just a reminder, the unit 8 math test will be on TUESDAY, MARCH 28^TH.

After lunch, we discussed the ending of their novel study book, and I went over the project options in details. I then asked the students which option they would like to do, and made note of who is doing what. Students are encouraged to start brainstorming ideas, and try to gather materials during the break. If they have the time, they could even start their project. I will be giving the students 3 days when they get back to work on it, as it will be due on THURSDAY, MARCH 30^TH.

After novel study, the students had Gym, and then I asked them to fill out their report card comments. Report cards will be going home on Friday, March 31^st.  After that, they had second break, and then headed to French for a bit. Shortly after, the students headed to the auditorium, for the PYP Dance Party! After that, they got ready to go home.

A lot of students mentioned that they will be going away this March Break, and others talked about the fun things they’ll be doing while they’re home. I wish everyone a safe and fun break, and I hope you all get to sleep in a bit! I will be out of the country from the 12^th to the 20^th, so I may not have access to my email during that time. If you send me an email, I will definitely respond when I get back.

Hello Parents!

Today was part 2 of our ski trip! It was much colder today, compared to yesterday, which meant the slopes were pretty slippery. We ended up packing up an hour earlier than expected, due to the slope conditions, and the number of injuries. Based on the feedback from the students, most of them really enjoyed their skiing/ snowboarding experiences. Tomorrow we will be back at school, for our last day before March Break!

Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       Math: Unit 8, Lesson 11 and 12- Workbook P#122-125.

2.       Novel Study: read the rest of the book, and answer the corresponding questions. Students must read over the project outline, and begin thinking about which option they want to do. They can begin working on it over the March Break, but they will have some class time to complete it when they get back. It will be due on Thursday, March 30^th.

3.       Lastly, this week will be spirit week! Students are encouraged to participate all week!

Monday: Pajama day

Tuesday: Crazy hair day/ Colourful (neon) day

Wednesday: Superhero/ Princess day

Thursday: House colours

Friday: St. Patty’s Day- wear green!

Hello Parents!

Today we had our ski trip. I was inside the chalet all day, watching the students taking a break, eating lunch, wiping tears, etc. Despite the many falls, trips, and rolls, I am so proud of all the grade 5’s who got right back up and kept trying! Tomorrow will be part 2 of the trip, and I hope the students are just as excited for it as they were today!

   Just a few important notes before I go:

1.       The Grade 5’s and up will be going on a Ski trip on TOMORROW again!! This trip will also include other grades (from grade 5 to 8), and it will be a full day activity. Students must dress warm, as we will be outside almost all day! We will be leaving the school at 6:45am, and we will arrive back to St. Jude’s at 5:00pm. There is a café on site, so students can purchase a lunch if they bring money. Otherwise, please remember to pack a lunch for your child, as it will be a long day, and they need to eat! Students can bring a change of clothes (in case they get wet), and they can bring an extra pair of gloves and socks. PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD IS AT SJA BEFORE 6:45am!
